Sustainable Construction
Sustainable construction is important because the built environment is responsible for almost half of the UK’s carbon emissions. Buildings also account for half of our water consumption, about a third of landfill waste and a quarter of all raw materials. By reducing waste and increasing efficiency, sustainable construction not only benefits the environment, it also makes good financial sense.
A sustainable approach to construction meets these criteria:
- Design buildings, infrastructure and public spaces that not only suit their purpose but that use resources efficiently and are also resilient, adaptable and attractive
- Reduce the amount of construction, demolition and excavation waste that goes into landfill
- Minimise the carbon emissions involved in the construction process and the operational energy used in the completed building
- Conserve water resources by reducing consumption
- Preserve and enhance the biodiversity within and around all construction sites
- Respect the local community and consider the impact that the construction process will have on the surrounding environment
- Monitor all sustainability measures against industry benchmarks and report the results within a recognised framework
